Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Introduces R&B, Rock & African Drumming to Spring 2006 Class Schedule
From movement classes for toddlers, to R&B, jazz, and classical music, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, a Division of the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music, announces an eclectic schedule of individual instrumental and vocal lessons, group classes, ensembles, and choral opportunities for students of all ages and levels. Class offerings include:
Pre-teen Saxophone Ensemble/Pre-teen Clarinet Ensemble This class is for young musicians (ages 9–12) interested in playing music and building their technical skills. Students will be encouraged to bring their own creative ideas to the experience. Acceptance is based on audition.
Teen Jazz & Gospel Chorus Teens (ages 13–19) will learn basic styles of jazz and gospel music. Performances will take place at the Conservatory and at other local venues.
Teen Rock Ensemble From Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles, through Nirvana and Green Day, songs will be drawn from the whole five-decade history of rock, focusing on the ensemble skills and elements of expression (groove, teamwork, and dynamics) that make this music come alive. Rhythm-section players and vocalists are welcome.
African Djembe Drumming Students will experience the fire and passion of African drumming while learning traditional African rhythms on the djembe.
R&B Vocal Workshop The class will study songs and vocal stylings of the great R&B/funk artists circa 1950-1980. The last four weeks will be spent working with a professional rhythm section in preparation for a concert performance.
Jazz Vocal Workshop Students will sing with a professional pianist and vocal coach, and learn to communicate with the musicians on the bandstand, while developing stage presence. Various interpretations of jazz standards will be explored.
And don’t forget, in addition to numerous private and group classes, the Conservatory offers Music Adventures (music and movement for ages 18 months–6), Bella Voce (women’s choir), Children’s Chorus (ages 7–13), Theory/Composition, Ear Training/Arranging, Community Orchestra, and Music Therapy.

Children’s Chorus, African Drumming, Classical, Jazz & R&B Highlight Queens Conservatory’s Spring 2006 Schedule From movement classes for toddlers, to professional studies for graduate students, the Queens Conservatory of Music, a division of the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music, announces an eclectic schedule of individual instrumental and vocal lessons, group classes, ensembles, and choral opportunities for students of all ages and levels. Class offerings include:
Children’s Chorus The Children’s Chorus is open to children ages 7–13. The Chorus performs several times a year, including a holiday concert in December and a concert in June.
Music Theater Students learn in-depth preparation, style, and presentation for musical and dramatic performances, and perform a costumed and partially-staged musical (ages 10–15). African Drumming
West African rhythms from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal, are taught on the djembe and dundoun drums. The course, which covers history, technique, and etiquette, is open to beginners.
Jazz Vocal Workshop
Students learn to communicate successfully with musicians on the bandstand! The class explores styles and interpretations of jazz standards. Topics include melody, lyrics, phrasing, and stage presence. Teens–adults.
Jazz Instrumental Workshop Aspiring artists play with a small band and develop the skills needed for public performance (teens–adults).
R&B Ensemble Known for its memorable melodies and pulsating presence, R&B is deeply rooted in the blues. Students perform classic, contemporary, and original R&B songs that continue to influence American culture. Vocalists may apply.
