MUSIC ADVENTURES DIVISION
(ages 18 months – 3.11 years)
Music Adventures is an innovative program that encourages creative expression through music, dance, and related arts, including painting, storytelling, and acting. This class uses themed units in topics such as dinosaurs, jazz music, and world cultures as a means of teaching elements of music and movement. Each class is limited in size. Classes for children 18 months to 3 years require a parent or guardian to be present in class. Children ages 3–4 participate by themselves.

SUZUKI DIVISION
(ages 3 and up)
The Suzuki Approach is based on the principles of Talent Education, founded by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. Dr. Suzuki stated that every child can learn music in much the same way that a child learns its mother tongue. In the Suzuki approach, the parent plays an active role in his or her child's education by attending lessons and classes with the child and practicing at home with him. The program includes private lessons, group classes, and theory classes that are age appropriate and fun. The program runs the full course of the year with 34 weeks of private lessons, 30 weeks of group and theory classes, two recitals, and two festival concerts. Instruments offered are Violin, Viola, Cello, Guitar, and Piano.

Classes & Ensembles for Adults
The faculty of the Classical Division hold degrees from the world's leading conservatories. Instruction in the Classical Division provides students with the basics of their instrument, securing a solid foundational framework. While fostering musical professionalism, the Conservatory seeks to open horizons on classical music by encouraging improvisation, alternate styles, new music, and creative expression.
Classes & Ensembles for Youth
The first price listed after class length is for students enrolled in private lessons at the Conservatory. The second price is for students not enrolled in private lessons at the Conservatory.
Keyboard Adventures (ages 4–5.11 years)
Children ages 4-6 learn the basics of piano and musical notation in a small group setting. Each child has his or her own keyboard in the class, and the students play individually and together. This course prepares children for private instruction.

Theory I–IV (ages 7–13)
These sequential music theory classes for students ages 7-13 are an enjoyable introduction to the world of music, covering such topics as the basics of music, composers, and musical styles. Theory II–IV continue to teach theory in a fun and interactive way, with units on notation, rhythm, and harmony.

Children's Chorus (ages 7–13)
The group is open to all children ages 7-13 who like to sing. The Chorus performs several times each year, including a holiday concert in December and a spring concert in June. Students do not need to be studying voice.

Music Theater (ages 10–15)
Students learn techniques of style and presentation and perform a costumed, partially staged musical show each semester. The shows are either a musical review or excerpts from Broadway musicals.

Chamber Music Ensembles
Students who are able to read music are encouraged to form a chamber ensemble, which will be coached by the Conservatory's faculty. Any student wishing to play in a chamber ensemble should contact the classical division director in order to coordinate a suitable group.

Youth Orchestra (ages 9–18)
The orchestra is open to all instrumentalists who can read music. All students registered for individual lessons in an orchestral instrument are encouraged to join. A variety of repertoire will be covered, and performances will be arranged throughout the year. Auditions for the 2007-08 season will be held in early September. Candidates will be required to play a scale, a classical piece of their own choosing, and sight read. A $60 materials fee/parent association dues is required. Adult Ear Training I & II This sequential course will cover such topics as solfege syllables, sight-singing, rhythm, chord identification, and intervals. Prerequisite: Theory I and II, or permission of the division director.

Music History & Appreciation
This is a music history class taught from a compositional point of view. Music styles and forms are studied as they have been developed over time.

Music Theory I & II
Music Theory I covers the basics of music notation, including note names, time signatures, and rhythm, as well as an introduction to intervals, major scales, and key signatures. Solfege and ear-training are also covered. Music Theory II continues the study of major scales and key signatures as well as more complex rhythms and new time signatures. Students also learn minor keys, along with intervals and triads.

Chamber Music
Adult students of intermediate level or higher who wish to form a chamber ensemble should contact the classical division director for help in assembling a group. The group will be coached by a member of the faculty.

Students wishing to study jazz, world, rock, pop, and hip-hop may choose from a variety of individual lessons, group classes, and performing ensembles. The Jazz, World, and Contemporary Music Division is further divided into youth (up to age 18) and adult sections. New students are encouraged to talk to the registration staff or the division director prior to enrolling for classes.

Teen Contemporary Theory
This course will introduce teens to the basics of music theory, specifically concentrating on contemporary forms. Students will learn how to perform and listen to music with increased knowledge and ease. Students will also work on their own compositions.

Improvising for Teens I–II
Teens will learn to improvise with a group of their peers. These classes will serve as follow-ups to Teen Contemproary Theory.

Introduction to Music with the Computer
This class is designed to teach the basic composition, notation, and audio capabilities of Garage Band 3. It is an entry-level course for youth who need a basic sketchpad system for creating musical ideas. Garage Band's integration of loops, sequencing, notation, and audio recording into a simple but powerful user interface is a perfect tool.

Teen Jazz Ensemble I–III
In this class, teenage musicians will get to experience the exhilaration of playing real jazz. Students will perform with a small group, developing the techniques necessary for public performance. Jazz standards, Bebop, and post-bop compositions will be played.

Teen Rock Ensemble
Ever dream of being part of a rock group? This is your chance. Students will learn how to perform in an ensemble and to develop stage presence.

Teen Rhythm & Blues Choir
This chorus, open to enthusiastic singers, ages 13–19, concentrates on learning the basic styles of rhythm & blues. Musical selections will include works of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and many others. Performances will take place at the Conservatory and at other nearby locations.

African Drumming for Youth (ages 6–12)
Students learn traditional African rhythms on the djembe and the songba drums in an ensemble setting. Strong focus on technique, drum etiquette, form, and style. The historical, social, and political roles of this art form will be discussed.

Adult Contemporary Theory I
Students will learn to understand and demonstrate the essential concepts that form the basis of contemporary forms including notation, rhythm, meter, form, key, and scales. Other points of interest include the fundamentals of jazz and other forms of harmony, how to read a lead sheet, the function of instrumentation in a jazz combo, and key styles and musicians that have influenced the history of jazz.

Adult Contemporary Theory II & III
As follow-ups to Adult Contemporary Theory I, these classes move into more complex study of jazz scales, harmony, and jazz composition.

Adult Contemporary Theory IV
This class will be devoted to teaching jazz improvisational concepts. Sight reading, ensemble playing, and building a jazz standards repertoire will be covered. This course is recommended for wind instrument players as an introduction to jazz ensemble classes.

Contemporary Ear Training I & II
These courses teach you to hear and identify harmonies and scales associated with jazz and other forms of contemporary music. No previous experience is necessary.

Vocal Technique
Learn the mechanics of singing. Aspects of being a good singer, including pitch, breath control, range, and more, are addressed in this class. This course is recommended as a prerequisite for Jazz Vocal Workshop.

Jazz Vocal Workshop
Improve your jazz singing and gain valuable experience by performing each week with a professional pianist in front of peers and a jazz vocal coach. During the last; three weeks a professional jazz trio will work with the class.

Adult Jazz & Gospel Choir
Singing in a jazz & gospel choir is an experience that is both fun and inspirational. This course will give adult students the opportunity to sing jazz and gospel music in a supportive environment.

Jazz Instrumental Workshop I & II
Students have the opportunity to play in an ensemble and develop the techniques necessary for public performance. Music selections include jazz standards. Students' reading, technical, and performance abilities are exercised extensively.

Music of Mali
Learn about the music of Mali via demonstrations and instruction in the use of the djembe, balilophone, and other African instruments. Dance is an added component as well, giving one a bird's-eye view of the rich culture of this nation.

Voice of the Tango
Learn about this special art form from Argentinean vocalist Sofia Koutsovitis and special guests. This class culminates with instrumental performances of this genre. A dance portion is included as well.

THE DIPLOMA PROGRAMS
The Diploma Programs are designed for students wishing to pursue a career in music. Students may major in Classical or Jazz study on piano, voice, string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, or theory and composition. Diploma Programs classes and most private lessons take place at our Flushing, Queens, campus.
The Diploma Programs offer a course of undergraduate study leading to the Professional Diploma, and a program of graduate study leading to the Graduate Diploma. The Professional Diploma (undergraduate) requires four years of full-time study. The prerequisite for entry into this program is a high school diploma or equivalent degree. Students are eligible to enter this program after having had appreciable musical training in the past. A live audition is required. The Graduate Diploma requires two years of full-time study. This program is open to students who have earned the Professional Diploma at the Conservatory or a comparable baccalaureate-level music degree or diploma from another recognized school, university, or conservatory. A live audition is also required.
While the Conservatory is not a degree-granting institution, course credits are transferable to a number of accredited music schools and university programs. Alumni have gone on to further studies at other graduate and doctoral programs as well as professional performing and teaching careers throughout the world.
Foreign students may obtain an F1 (Student) Visa in order to study, and the Conservatory offers English as a Second Language courses to complement international students' studies. For further information, call 718-461-8910, and ask for an information packet.
