SUSAN BERKOWITZ MA, MT-BC Music Therapy A long-time resident of Brooklyn, Susan Berkowitz received her MA in music therapy from New York University in 2008. She is soon-to-be licensed as a creative arts therapist by New York State (LCAT), and holds her certification as a music therapist by the Certification Board of Music Therapist (MT-BC). Susan also holds a Certificate in Creative Arts Therapies from the New School University. Susan has been at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music since 2008, working with adult groups and seniors. Susan also works at the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function in the Bronx in sub-acute rehabilitation, with adults recovering from stroke and other neurological disabilities, joint replacement, surgery and accidents. She also has had experience with special needs children in public elementary schools throughout the city, and adults in pain management, palliative care and hospice at Beth Israel Medical Center. An avid flute player, Susan has performed with the Riverside Orchestra, 92d St. Y Symphony, Village Playback Theatre and D’Amato Opera. Before turning to music therapy as a way of giving back by sharing the therapeutic powers of music, Susan held careers in book publishing, photography and software development on Wall St. Building on recent neurological findings that music engages all parts of the brain, Susan uses all parts of hers to connect people to their own powers of healing, creativity and well-being through music.
