STEFAN BAUER Vibraphone, Marimba, Composition Stefan Bauer is internationally regarded as an excellent instrumentalist. Since 1978 he has been has been travelling his native Germany and neighbouring countries annually with his own ensembles. A variety of tours led him to Africa (1987, 2002), Eastern Europe, India (1993), and all over Central Europe and Canada. He has appeared at Festivals from Abidjan to Zürich, and during the Olympics in Seoul/South Korea in 1988. Bauer is also a prolific composer and has seven CDs out with mostly original compositions, musicians including Tim Hagans, Mick Goodrick, Charlie Mariano, Jim Vivian, Adam Nussbaum, Barry Romberg, Marcio Doctor, Kenny Wheeler, Howard Levy, Paul McCandless, Laurent Roy, Rick Lazar, Matthias Nadolny. He also wrote music for a TV show in Germany, and for the Canadian short film "Seeduction". Bauer is the recipient of a jazz-compositions prize from Monaco, the cultural award of the city of Dortmund/Germany,and of numerous Canada Council Grants for writing, recording and touring projects. In 1997 his CD Best of Two Worlds was nominated for a JUNO Award (the Canadian Grammy). In April of 2002 his suite Street Scenes (commissioned by Manitoba's New Music association 'Groundswell') was premiered. Bauer has also participated in countless radio and TV broadcasts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Zaire, Korea and Canada and can be heard on more than 30 CDs. Besides his work as an active performer he has been teaching piano, composition, theory and vibraphone since 1981 at various institutions including Conservatory Osnabrück, Musikschule Castrop-Rauxel and Münster, Folkwang Musikhochschule Essen (Germany), University of Manitoba, Brandon University, the Professional Musicians' College and the Manitoba Conservatory (Canada), the Singers Forum in NYC, and the Brooklyn Queens Conservatory since 2007, also as an Orff instructor. Stefan loves teaching and regards it as an important part of his own musical evolution. Stefan regards the balance of playing, writing and teaching music as the ideal platform from which to share his knowledge of and his love for music with others.
