I believe that music education is absolutely invaluable. It builds community and gives us the opportunity to be a part of something larger than ourselves. Studying music enables us to reap the benefits of discipline, expression, joy, and confidence. I know this firsthand as I began my music studies when I was in the fourth grade. Years of studying and playing in bands, choruses, and orchestras helped me to cultivate a love of making music, leading up to a Master’s Degree in Tuba Performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
The Conservatory has come a long way since violinist, Edward A. Whitelaw, and pianist, Mary Forster-Deyo, founded the school in 1897 with two hundred enrollees. Today we serve over 15,000 students and concert attendees annually.
Our faculty members are among the finest performers and teachers in New York City. We provide music education in New York City public schools through our Music Partners Program. Our Music Therapy Program effects change for children and adults with developmental and medical needs. We have the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra, the Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale, the Jazz & Gospel Choir, classical chamber groups, and Master Classes.
So much happens here. Stand in the lobby at any time, on any day, on any evening. One minute you hear one lone instrument. The next minute a group of instruments. Wait another minute and there’s the harmony of different voices singing as one. And all of a sudden, there might be the sound of thunderous footsteps. All in the service of making music.
We at the Conservatory are in the business of not just teaching the nuts and bolts of music. We are also in the inspiration business. Music can and does enhance our lives. A thriving community center, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music is the hub for building community through music education.
