Frequently Asked Questions

When can I register?
The Brooklyn Conservatory operates two 15-week semesters for private instruction and an 8-week summer program. Students may register for private lessons in any instrument or voice at any time during the year and pay the prorated cost of the remaining lessons in the semester. Students may join group classes up to four weeks after the semester has begun (and pay the prorated cost). See the calendar for fall and spring semester pre-registration and registration dates.

How do I register?
Registration can be done online by clicking here, in person or by calling 718.622.3300 x211.

Can I try before I buy?
Yes. If you plan to register for private lessons for the first time, you may pay for one individual trial lesson with no obligation to register for further lessons. Trial lessons may be rescheduled once with 24 hours’ notice.

How do I pay for my classes?
Contact the registration staff for complete details at 718.622.3300 x211. Payment plans are available.

Other Fees
The following are nonrefundable fees, which are assessed in additional to lesson and class tuition: Registration fee: $35 paid once per school year (fall and spring semesters) per family account. Payment plan fee: $25 per semester. Returned check fee: $30. Late payment fee: $30.

What is the absence/makeup policy?

Each program has its own makeup up policy. Regardless of the program, any missed class or lesson due to a teacher’s absence will be made up.

House Party: each student is allowed 2 makeup classes per semester with at least 24 hours notice of the missed class. To schedule a makeup class, parents should call the registration desk for information on what classes have makeup slots available. No makeups are available in the summer semester.

Suzuki: there are no makeups for student absences from private lessons or group classes.

Conservatory and Berkeley Carroll Private Lessons: students are allowed 1 makeup per semester.  If the student is unable to attend a lesson, the school or teacher must be notified 24 hours in advance. An unexcused absence is one in which the school has not been given 24 hours notice and therefore will not be made up.  If a student is absent for 3 consecutive weeks without notice, the student will be considered withdrawn and will forfeit the lesson time.

Conservatory Group Classes: Makeups are not given for student absences at group class sessions.

Course Cancellation
The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. If a class is cancelled, the student will receive a prorated refund for all remaining sessions.

Withdrawal/Refunds
All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing (mail, fax, or email) to the registration office.  Refunds will only be given within the first four weeks from the start of the semester.  If you register after the fourth week of the semester, you are committing to the remainder of the semester and are not eligible for a refund. Students requesting withdrawals within the first four weeks of the semester will be held responsible for prorated tuition for completed sessions (including absences) plus 10% of the total contracted tuition. Registration and Payment Plan fees are not refundable in the event of withdrawal. Refunds take 4-8 weeks to process.

Materials
The student is responsible for providing his or her own music books, sheet music, instruments, and materials, except where fees have been charged along with the class tuition.
